What is Battery Runtime?

Battery runtime is how long a battery can power a load before its voltage drops below the minimum operating threshold. At its simplest: Runtime (h) = Capacity (mAh) / Load Current (mA). In practice you apply a derating factor (typically 0.7–0.85) to account for temperature, aging, and the fact that rated capacity assumes a slow 0.2C discharge rate.

What You'll Learn

By the end of this guide, you'll be able to:

Calculate expected battery runtime for any load
Size a battery pack to meet a target runtime
Calculate charge time and safe charge current using the C-rate
Apply real-world derating factors to avoid surprise failures in the field

What You'll Need

Battery capacity (mAh or Ah) — from the battery label or datasheet
Average load current (mA) — measured or estimated from your circuit
Battery chemistry — Li-ion, LiPo, NiMH, or lead-acid (affects derating and C-rate limits)
Target runtime (hours) — if sizing a new battery
Charge current (mA or A) — from your charger spec

Step-by-Step Guide

1
Measure or Estimate Your Average Load Current
The most common mistake is using peak current instead of average. Most battery-powered devices cycle between active and sleep modes:
- Measure with a multimeter in series with the battery, or use a current probe over time
- For microcontroller designs: estimate average = (I_active × t_active + I_sleep × t_sleep) / (t_active + t_sleep)
- Add 10–20% margin for peripheral startup spikes, ADC conversions, and radio transmissions
Example: ESP32 with WiFi — 160mA during transmit (50ms/10s), 10µA in deep sleep. Average ≈ (160mA × 0.05s + 0.01mA × 9.95s) / 10s ≈ 0.81mA average.
2
Calculate Estimated Runtime from Existing Battery
Use the basic formula: Runtime (h) = Capacity (mAh) / Load (mA)
Then apply a derating factor to get real-world runtime:
- Li-ion / LiPo at room temperature, low current: derate to 85% of rated capacity
- Li-ion / LiPo at high current (>0.5C): derate to 70–75%
- Li-ion / LiPo in cold conditions (<10°C): derate to 60–70%
- NiMH: derate to 70–80% (higher self-discharge)
- Lead-acid: derate to 50–60% for cycle life (avoid below 50% depth of discharge)
Enter your capacity, load current, chemistry, and efficiency into the Battery Charge Time Calculator to get adjusted runtime automatically.
3
Size a Battery for Target Runtime
If you need a specific runtime, work backwards:
Required Capacity (mAh) = Load (mA) × Target Runtime (h) / Derating Factor
Example: 5mA load, 24-hour runtime, Li-ion at room temp (derate 0.85): Required capacity = 5mA × 24h / 0.85 = 141mAh minimum → choose a 200mAh cell for comfortable margin.
Use the Battery Charge Time Calculator in "Calculate Capacity" mode — enter your load current as the charge current and target runtime as the charge time to get the minimum capacity automatically.
4
Check the C-Rate for Safe Operation
The C-rate defines how fast you can charge or discharge relative to capacity. A 1C rate charges/discharges a battery completely in 1 hour.
- Discharge C-rate = Load Current / Capacity. Example: 500mA from a 1000mAh cell = 0.5C
- Maximum safe discharge: Li-ion standard cells: 1–2C; high-drain cells: 5–30C; lead-acid: 0.1–0.2C continuous
- Charge C-rate = Charge Current / Capacity. Standard Li-ion: max 1C; slow charge: 0.5C; fast charge: 2–4C (if cell rated for it)
High discharge rates reduce effective capacity. At 2C, a Li-ion cell may only deliver 80% of its rated capacity.
The Battery Charge Time Calculator shows C-rate alongside charge time so you can verify you're within safe limits.
5
Calculate Charge Time
Charge Time (h) = Capacity (mAh) / Charge Current (mA) × (1 / Charge Efficiency)
Charge efficiency accounts for energy lost as heat during charging:
- Li-ion constant-current/constant-voltage (CC/CV): ~90% efficient → multiply by 1.1
- NiMH with delta-V detection: ~75–80% efficient → multiply by 1.25
- Lead-acid with float charge: ~70–75% efficient
Enter your capacity, charge current, and chemistry into the Battery Charge Time Calculator to get charge time, C-rate, and efficiency-adjusted result in one step.
6
Check Internal Resistance for High-Current Applications
For loads above 500mA or where voltage sag matters (motors, RF transmitters, high-power LEDs), check battery internal resistance:
Voltage Sag = Load Current × Internal Resistance
A 200mΩ battery (aged 18650) at 2A sag = 400mV — this may drop the voltage below your circuit's minimum operating voltage, cutting off the device before the battery is truly depleted.
Use the Battery Internal Resistance Calculator: measure open-circuit voltage and loaded voltage at a known current to calculate Ri. Replace cells with Ri > 200mΩ in high-current applications.

Example: Bluetooth Sensor Node

Given:

Microcontroller: nRF52840, active 10ms every 5s, deep sleep otherwise
Active current: 12mA (BLE advertising) | Sleep current: 2µA
Battery: 500mAh Li-ion, room temperature
Target: Run 6 months between charges

Step 1 — Calculate average current: Average = (12mA × 0.01s + 0.002mA × 4.99s) / 5s = (0.12mA + 0.0100mA) / 5s ≈ 0.026mA

Step 2 — Estimate runtime: Ideal runtime = 500mAh / 0.026mA = 19,230 hours ≈ 800 days With 85% derating (Li-ion room temp, low current) = 800 × 0.85 = 680 days ✓

6 months = ~180 days. The 500mAh cell comfortably exceeds the target with margin for battery aging.

Step 3 — Plan charge cycle: If charging at 250mA (0.5C): Charge time = 500mAh / 250mA × 1.1 ≈ 2.2 hours

Verify in the Battery Charge Time Calculator: Capacity = 500mAh, Charge Current = 250mA, Chemistry = Li-ion, Efficiency = 90% → Result: 2.22 hours, C-rate = 0.5C ✓

Sanity Check Your Estimate

C-rate should be below 1C for standard cells during discharge; above 1C indicates high drain — verify your cell is rated for it
Runtime should scale linearly with capacity — if doubling capacity doesn't roughly double runtime, recheck your average current estimate
Internal resistance check: voltage sag < 5–10% of nominal voltage at peak current is acceptable
Red flags:
- Runtime in field is much less than calculated → re-measure average current; sleep currents are often underestimated
- Battery gets hot during discharge → C-rate is too high; switch to a higher-capacity or high-drain cell
- Sudden cutoff before battery is depleted → voltage sag is hitting your minimum operating voltage

Common Mistakes

Using Peak Current Instead of Average

Why it happens: Peak current is easy to find in datasheets; average requires measuring or calculating duty cycle. How to avoid: Always calculate weighted average current over a full duty cycle: I_avg = (I_active × t_active + I_sleep × t_sleep) / t_cycle. Using peak current can overestimate actual consumption by 100–1000× in low-power designs.

Ignoring the Derating Factor

Why it happens: Battery labels show rated capacity (measured at 0.2C, 25°C). Real conditions differ significantly. How to avoid: Always apply chemistry and condition-appropriate derating. The Battery Charge Time Calculator includes chemistry efficiency factors. For outdoor or cold-environment designs, derate an additional 15–20% for sub-zero temperatures.

Exceeding the Safe Charge C-Rate

Why it happens: Choosing a high charge current to minimise charge time without checking if the cell supports it. How to avoid: Never exceed the cell's maximum charge rate (check datasheet — typically 0.5C–1C for standard Li-ion, up to 4C for fast-charge rated cells). Above the maximum, cells heat rapidly, swell, and can fail catastrophically. The Battery Charge Time Calculator flags C-rates above 1C with a warning.

Deeply Discharging Lead-Acid Batteries

Why it happens: Treating lead-acid batteries like Li-ion — running them flat to maximise runtime. How to avoid: Lead-acid batteries should never be discharged below 50% of capacity (10.5V for a 12V battery). Deep discharge causes irreversible sulfation, permanently reducing capacity. Plan your runtime calculation using only 50% of rated capacity for lead-acid.

Not Accounting for Self-Discharge During Storage

Why it happens: Battery is charged before shipping or storage but depletes before first use. How to avoid: Li-ion self-discharges at ~2–3% per month; NiMH at 15–30% per month; lead-acid at 3–5% per month. For products that sit on shelves, account for 6–12 months of self-discharge in your capacity budget, or spec a higher-capacity cell.

Forgetting End-of-Life Capacity Fade

Why it happens: Designing for a new battery's capacity, not a used one after 300–500 cycles. How to avoid: Li-ion cells typically retain 80% capacity at end-of-life (500 cycles at 1C). If your product must function for 2+ years, size the battery so that 80% of rated capacity still meets your runtime target.

FAQ

What is battery runtime and how is it calculated?

Battery runtime is how long a battery powers a load before voltage drops below the minimum operating threshold. Basic formula: Runtime (h) = Capacity (mAh) / Load Current (mA). Multiply by a derating factor (0.7–0.85 for Li-ion) to get real-world estimates. The Battery Charge Time Calculator applies chemistry-specific efficiency factors automatically.

What is a C-rate and why does it matter?

C-rate is the charge or discharge current relative to battery capacity. 1C = fully charge/discharge in 1 hour. C-rate matters because high rates reduce effective capacity (a Li-ion at 2C may deliver only 80% of rated capacity) and cause excess heat. Always check your cell's maximum charge and discharge C-rates in the datasheet.

How do I measure my device's average current draw?

Use a multimeter in series for steady-state loads. For duty-cycled devices (sleep/wake patterns), use a current monitor IC (like the INA219) or a bench power supply with current logging. Calculate average: I_avg = Σ(I_n × t_n) / T_total. For microcontrollers, check the datasheet for active, idle, and sleep current, then weight by time spent in each mode.

How much capacity do I need for 24 hours of runtime?

Required capacity (mAh) = Load (mA) × Runtime (h) / Derating. For 10mA load at 24 hours with 0.85 Li-ion derating: 10mA × 24h / 0.85 = 282mAh minimum. Add 20–30% margin for aging and uncertainty → target a 400mAh cell. Use the Battery Charge Time Calculator in "Calculate Capacity" mode for an instant result.

Why does my battery run out faster than calculated?

The most common reasons: (1) average current was underestimated — peak currents during radio TX, motor startup, or display updates are often missed; (2) derating factor was not applied; (3) cold temperature reduces capacity significantly; (4) battery is aged and has lost capacity. Re-measure actual current draw and re-run the calculation with measured values.

What is the difference between battery capacity and battery energy?

Capacity (mAh or Ah) measures electric charge — how much current flows over time, regardless of voltage. Energy (Wh or J) is capacity × voltage — it accounts for the voltage level. For comparing different chemistries or calculating system-level energy budgets, use Wh. Use the Electrical Energy Conversion Calculator to convert between mAh, Wh, and joules.

Can I connect batteries in parallel to increase capacity?

Yes — paralleling cells of the same type, voltage, and state of charge doubles capacity (and doubles runtime). Each cell must be within 50–100mV of each other before connecting to avoid large balancing currents. Use a dedicated parallel protection/balancing circuit for Li-ion. For lead-acid, parallel connection is straightforward with matched batteries.

How long does a Li-ion battery last before it needs replacement?

A standard Li-ion cell retains about 80% of original capacity after 500 full charge cycles at 1C. Partial cycles (e.g., charging from 50%) count as partial cycles, so real-world cycle count is often much higher before hitting 80%. After 80% retention, capacity fade accelerates. Design your runtime for 80% remaining capacity if the product must function for 2+ years.
